Mission
The mission of The Barbara H. Chaffee, MD, MPH Educational Fund is to enable dedicated health professionals who currently reside in the Greater Binghamton NY Area to continue their education in the field of HIV/AIDS and follow in Dr. Chaffee’s footsteps well into the 21st century.
About the Fund
The Barbara H. Chaffee, MD, MPH Educational Fund was created in 2010 to honor and recognize over two decades of Dr. Chaffee’s service to people with HIV/AIDS and the health care professionals who care for them. It allows donors to make a lasting impact on the delivery of health care for people living with HIV/AIDS in the Greater Binghamton area and honors the work and life of Dr. Chaffee.
Dr. Chaffee, who lost her courageous battle with breast cancer on March 5, 2013, was one of the region’s first physicians to be moved by the plight of those suffering from HIV/AIDS. She started treating AIDS patients early and intensively at a time when few other doctors would. Through her continuing scholarship and experience as medical director at both the Internal Medicine Center at Binghamton General Hospital and the Broome County Health Department’s HIV/STD clinics, she contributed greatly to the HIV/AIDS education not only of local health care professionals, including physician residents, nurses, and case managers, but to those throughout upstate New York.
The fund accepts applications annually for continuing education opportunities in the field of HIV/AIDS to employees of United Health Services; Clinical Campus of Upstate Medical Center at Binghamton; Broome County Health Department; STAP (Southern Tier AIDS Program, Inc.); and resident physicians & medical students (MD or DO) currently in training at UHS Hospitals or the Clinical Campus of Upstate Medical Center at Binghamton.
Please consider joining Our Founder’s Circle, those who pledge $1,000 or more to the fund. Founders Circle members have the option of pledging payments in either 3 monthly or up to 8 quarterly installments.
If you are a medical professional who wants to learn more about HIV, apply for a grant from the fund by reviewing the guidelines here and downloading the application here.
