Established in loving memory of Constance Elwood Wilk (1931 – 2021), the Connie Wilk Scholarship Fund will provide an educational scholarship to a graduating senior from Binghamton High School pursuing studies in the field of healthcare.
Connie (maiden name Elwood) was a native of Binghamton and a 1949 graduate of Binghamton Central High School. She left Binghamton for downstate NY to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree and begin her career. While there, she met the love of her life (Dr. Herbert J Wilk) who was in his medical residency. Several years later, she and her husband Herb returned to Binghamton, NY to expand their medical practice and build a life in a city and community they loved. For decades, Connie ran the office while assisting Herb with medical procedures. In addition to a successful medical practice together, Herb and Connie also raised four strong daughters who were also graduates of Binghamton (Central) High School.
A busy mother who worked full time while raising a family, Connie’s unwavering commitment to quality public education led her to seek a seat on the Binghamton School Board of Education in 1980. In 1984 she was elected President of the School Board and served a total of five years.
Connie’s patience and compassion were gifts to the many patients she cared for, to her husband of 50 years, her four daughters and their husbands, twelve grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. Connie welcomed everyone into her home and enjoyed many lively discussions over meals, school events, parties, and carpooling. Her kind, generous and non-judgmental heart touched countless people. The scholarship fund has been created to honor Connie’s giving spirit and legacy.
