About Sister Joanna Monticello
Sister Joanna Monticello was born in Endicott, NY in 1949 to Joseph and Anna Monticello. At a very young age she felt drawn to religious life and professed her vows as a Missionary Sister of the Sacred Heart on August 22, 1970.
Her life journey as an MSC Sister led her to many varied ministries as she responded to the call to “Be the Heart of God on Earth.” She received a Master’s Degree in Social Work in 2003.
Sister Joanna served for 16 years at Lourdes Hospital as a Hospice Social Worker and later as Coordinator of Counseling Services. In 2015, she was asked to help establish Mercy House of the Southern Tier and served there as the Director of Social Work and Spiritual Care.
Sister Joanna helped to make community happen wherever she was. She was the common denominator in so many groups and among so many friends. Whether it be her family, at Hospice, at Mercy House, or one-to-one, she had a unique ability to bring people together. Her life was an active and concrete expression of her own faith and values.
This memorial scholarship in her memory is an extension of her ministry to help those give back to the community in the spirit of social work.
